Bio & Contact

My name is Jeanette Sells, and I have been teaching 6th grade English at Albert Hill since 2014. I have a B.A. in writing from Johns Hopkins University and earned my master's degree in education at the University of Pennsylvania. A Richmond native (I graduated from Maggie Walker Governor's School in 2003), I taught English as a foreign language for several years in Argentina before returning to my hometown.

Middle school is a time of self-discovery. It is at once exciting, confusing, frustrating, and downright unpredictable. As students start to figure out who they are and how they fit into the world around them, books can be a source of guidance, encouragement, and inspiration. As an English teacher, one of my goals is to help students become more independent in exploring topics and ideas that are important to them by helping them find books that match their interests. Middle school English is an empowering transition from learning to read to reading to learn. To quote Frederick Douglass, "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."

In addition to reading, writing, and the Oxford comma, I am passionate about traveling (especially national parks!), running, and spending time with family and friends.
